CORVIN DALEK – FLESH BERLIN
Mr Wet & Hard Corvin Dalek was born in the hot Hungarian capital
of Budapest. His first DJ-gig as a young teenager, was in a disused
railway station on the outskirts of Bodrog near Sarospatak on a bitter
cold New Years Eve, 1988. It wasnt until the early 1990s that Corvin
decided to turn professional. After a chain of frustrating experiences
with inexperienced promoters, Corvin decided he wanted to have a bash
at party promotion himself. There followed a series of successful parties
and he promoted some of the first techno parties in Eastern Europe with
his company Sunflower Promotions, together with his friend and partner
DJ, Michael Burian. However, it was after a trip to the revitalised
German capital in 1998, that Corvin decided to make his move to Berlin.
It would be here that he could finally be creative and work on his new
ideas. "Berlin holds an important point in Europe, it’s the
place that binds old with new Europe, east and west. It is an extremely
artistically inspiring city". In The Beginning In January 1999,
Corvin mixed and produced, together with the Pet Shop Boys' producer
Chris Zippel, the DJ-mixed MFS techtrance compilation "Assorted
- E for Europe". This was the first technotrance compilation ever
to be released on mini-disc format too and after its première
appearance at the MIDI '99, it attained well deserved recognition within
the music industry for its inventiveness, humour and musical excellence,
with articles appearing in many music and technology magazines such
as Fono, Billboard and Stereoplay. World Record Arguably, Corvin has
probably the fastest hands in the DJ-business. During the Berlin Atonal
festival in February 1999, he presented his project - Twelve Elements
- this was his first attempt to set the world record by playing a set
with 12 Technics turntables! Sadly for Corvin, the performance was not
correctly recorded and so his world record couldn't be officially confirmed.
Later that year however, he made another attempt during the first Berlin
DJ-convention in the Casino club. This time, he officially set the world
record, playing a set with only 10 turntables and leaving the record
open for anyone who might like to try in the future. Pounds & Pénz
Corvins debut single on MFS was Pounds & Pénz, which was
produced together with Munich based DJ Alex Flatner. This innovative
and groundbreaking single was released in March 1999. For fun, Alex
had remixed the track for the "B" side and in the proccess,
he unknowingly created the worlds first Wet & Hard record. Flatner’s
Deutsche Mark remix has in the meantime, become the definitive version
of the track and both Corvin and Alex have achieved respect and recognition
from their peers, the world over, especially in England where, after
it's first release on Blue Amazon's Convert record label, the famed
BBC Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong (Essential Selection) played it every Friday
in his show for so many weeks, it became the most played track on his
show, ever.
After the initial success of E for Europe, Mark asked Corvin to mix
the 3rd ‘Assorted’ compilation for MFS. The theme this time
was Berlin of the future. Corvin recorded Assorted Stadtansichten -
a journey through Berlin on 4 Pioneer CDJ 500 -CD players and 2 Technics
turntables. This album (a sort of, synthony of a city) presented a selection
of various contemporary musical styles, which could be heard throughout
the various clubs of the city at this time. This album too received
a resounding response from both critics and fans alike and this time,
it wasn't just for Corvins creative DJ mixing, but for the albums intricate
and amusing artwork concept too, which Corvin conceived and designed
with Mark Reeder. Taking the Berlin street names and changing them from
statesmen to many of the activists of the original techno movement and
those whose influence helped shape the techno scene. This album wasn't
only commended in the international music press (in contemporary music
magazines such as Raveline, Muzik or Xlr8r) but it was also featured
within the highly selective pages of the New York Times, who in a hefty
half-page article, praised the album for its creative design concept
and inspiring selection of modern music, all to be found on an album
dedicated not only to the Truemmerfrauen of Berlin (the girls who rebuilt
the city by hand after the second world war) but the pioneers of the
Berliner techno scene who rebuilt the sound of the techno-city in the
heart of Europe after the fall of the Berlin wall. This album was the
closing chapter on the 20th century for Corvin and Mark, and both saw
it as a kind of adieu to the club-sound of that century. Corvin had
decided that he needed to be able to express himself and his Eastern
European roots more in his own music. It was now time to take some risks,
have some fun and feel the thrill of the chase. Wet & Hard Internationally,
Corvin was moving up and with him, his style was changing with each
release too. The Pounds & Pénz remix had inspired him immensely
to start something new and create his own style and he had discovered
from his gigs, a new ideology and desire emerging from the clubs of
eastern europe, where the kids dress sexier and the music policy is
open minded. Corvin was eager to persue the idea of creating a challenging
new sound for Eastern Europe and develop it in the future. This sound
was already emerging, it was all around. It was a mixture of musical
styles, but as no one could pin-point the sound with a simple term,
Corvin and Mark decided they would have a go at giving this sound a
name which would describe it - this sound meanwhile, has become known
worldwide as Wet & Hard. Corvin explains how the term for Wet &
Hard came about. "Mark and i were getting very bored with the constant
repetition of dance music and it's lack of sex, style, excitement and
imagination. As I am from Eastern Europe, I wanted to have my own sound
that illustrated my roots. We were sitting in a normal cafe in the small
town of Pardubice in the Czech Republic and we were flicking through
some porn magazines, which were on general display, looking for inspiration,
when in walked a girl wearing a skin-tight shiny black cat-suit and
high boots. Five minutes later she re-appeared wearing a small French-maids
apron over it. Mark jokingly said (as if speaking to her) "Are
you wet? Cos I am hard!" and I said "Thatis it! We will call
the sound Wet & Hard!" We had finally created a term which
defined the fresh sexy sound of Eastern Europe and Wet & Hard sums
it up perfectly." By the begining of the new millenium, Corvin
had become one of the resident DJ's at the notorious and taboo-less
XS club. This clubs image seemed just perfect for Corvin’s sound.
In XS, absolutely anything goes (and anything comes too!) Playing his
deep pornoid sounds with hip-thrusting drum patterns and powerfully
pumping bass lines, to an extremely open minded crowd, he added fuel
to an already highly erotic atmosphere. the effect was electrifiying!
So much so, that Inflagranti Film were so impressed with the style and
reactions from his music, that they asked him to perform as a DJ for
one of their notorious video-films. Wet & Hard is thrilling, blatently
sexual and very very stylish. It is a taboo-less sound, with no-holes
barred. One could say it's the throbbing pulse of the Pornoground. Since
Corvin was invited by Timo Maas to play with him at the Gallery in London,
he's been busy DJ'ing all over the globe from Colombia to China, UK
to USA (or from The Gallery to Gatecrasher!) Recent remix credits include
Destiny’s Child – Lose My Breath and New Order – Krafty.
Currently one of the most highly-rated DJ talents in the world, Club
Educate were proud to be the first promoters to bring Corvin's Wet &
Hard sound to Ireland, and continue to promote the sound worldwide.
